The Owls soared to an impressive start to their 2024-2025 season this weekend, delivering two commanding wins at the Cardinals Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by CCBC Catonsville. Union, led by the outstanding play of sophomore guard Destiny Bynum Johnson, showcased their strength and depth, with two dominant performances.

In their first matchup against Richard Bland College, Union overcame an early 6-0 deficit after back-to-back three-pointers from the Statesmen. The Owls quickly regrouped, responding with a decisive 12-2 run to seize control of the game. From there, Union’s relentless play on both ends of the court paved the way to a decisive victory, as they overpowered Richard Bland with a final score of 95-32. Destiny Bynum Johnson set the tone with a stellar performance, leading all scorers with 24 points. She added 12 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals, shooting an efficient 50% from the field. Union’s offense flourished as Yasmeen Brightwell contributed 11 points, while Saran Camara made a strong impact off the bench with 17 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. The Owls’ defense held firm, allowing Richard Bland few opportunities to close the gap and maintaining a stifling pace that kept Union in command.

Day two saw the Owls face tournament host, CCBC Catonsville, and the Owls kept up the same intensity that defined their season opener. Once again, Bynum Johnson led the charge, as Union routed the Cardinals 100-45 in a dominant display of teamwork and tenacity. Bynum Johnson put up another remarkable performance, scoring 25 points along with 5 rebounds and 1 steal. Yasmeen Brightwell added 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals, while Saran Camara and Ayva Tillmon came off the bench to contribute 13 and 10 points, respectively, rounding out the Owls’ balanced scoring effort. Union’s aggressive offense and unrelenting defense were on full display, showing the depth and cohesion that make them a formidable team this season.
